Bayreuth Festival

The annual festival of Wagnerian opera.

Richard Wagner built an opera house in Bayreuth Germany so he could produce his operas, namely his trilogy with prologue - Der Ring Des Nibelungen.  His last opera, Parsifal, was specifically written for the Bayreuth house.

The Bayreuth Festival presents Wagner's 10 mature operas, from The Flying Dutchman to Parsifal.  Demand for tickets is so great that people may have to apply for up to 10 years before receiving tickets.

Bayreuth is unique because it's orechestra pit is hidden from the view of the audience.

The festival began in 1876, with performances of The Ring.  The next season would not happen until 1882, in which Parsifal was performed.  There have been two interruptions to the festival's operation:

1) World War I (1914 - 1924), and;
2) Post World War II (1945-1951.)

The current Directors are the great-granddaughters of Wagner, Eva Wagner-Pasquier and Katharina Wagner.  They are two of Wolfgang Wagner's children, and took over from their father on September 1st, 2008.
